Get Ready Player One. AR/VR is about to have a new entrant in the arena. If Apple can do what great artists do: Ship. Something they have struggled with in this arena for years. Those days maybe numbered now.

It seems like the long-awaited reveal of the first Apple AR/VR headset is finally upon us, with rumors swirling about when exactly we can expect the official announcement. According to reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the headset is scheduled for a late fall release, but he has also noted that software development tools and ongoing drop testing issues could push the announcement to the spring or summer.
Previously, Kuo had predicted a January media event for the headset, but it seems that Apple is still working on the necessary tools for developers to create apps for the new platform. While this could potentially delay the announcement, it's worth noting that in the past, Apple has unveiled products earlier and made developer tools available at a later date. For example, the Apple Watch was announced in September 2014, with the watchOS developer SDK being published a couple months later, and the watch going on sale in April 2015.
In addition to the software issues, Kuo has also mentioned that the headset is experiencing mechanical problems during drop testing. This is the kind of issue that Apple will likely want to resolve before announcing the product.
Despite the potential delays, it's clear that the anticipation for the first Apple mixed reality headset is high. The headset is expected to be a premium, high-end device, featuring dozens of cameras and sensors, dual 4K displays, and a M2-based SoC, with a price tag rumored to be above $2000. There have also been rumors that the headset may require the use of AirPods for audio output during privacy-sensitive conversations, such as videoconferencing.
Overall, it's unclear when exactly we can expect the official reveal of the Apple AR/VR headset, but it looks like it could be sometime this year. As always, we'll have to wait and see what Apple has in store for us.
