The Top Movies Coming To Netflix, Hulu and More This Week

This week, movie lovers have a variety of options to choose from, including something for fans of Rob Lowe. In a new Netflix film, Lowe plays a father who is determined to find his missing dog and embarks on a journey with his son along the Appalachian trail.

For those who enjoyed the high-flying action of Top Gun: Maverick, the movie Devotion offers a different perspective on the military aviation genre, with a focus on the bond between two pilots and the period setting. Peacock offers a horror film that explores the fears of life during the Covid-19 pandemic, written by Kevin Williamson, the scribe behind the Scream franchise. And Hulu's The Drop promises to be a dark comedy that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats. Check everything out below!

Devotion (Paramount Plus + On Demand - Available Now)

Devotion is a film that explores the friendship and bond between two pilots, Tom Hudner, played by Glen Powell, and Ensign Jesse Brown, played by Jonathan Majors. While it was made prior to the release of Top Gun: Maverick, it is not difficult to see how the success of the Tom Cruise blockbuster may have helped raise awareness for Devotion.

The movie is set in 1950 and centers around the challenges faced by Ensign Brown as a Black pilot in a time when racism was still prevalent. Through Majors' powerful and brooding performance, the audience is able to witness Ensign Brown's internal struggles as he motivates himself by repeating the hateful things he has heard throughout his life.

In contrast to many war movies, Devotion takes a more subtle approach in its storytelling, focusing on the bond that forms between the two pilots as they fly together. Powell's character, Tom Hudner, serves as a counterbalance to Ensign Brown's intensity, playing the role of the strong, silent co-pilot who mostly reacts to his fellow skyman.

Overall, Devotion is a powerful and well-crafted film that shines a light on the little-known experiences of Black pilots in the 1950s. Through the performances of its lead actors, the film is able to successfully convey the theme of friendship and brotherhood amidst the challenges of racism and prejudice.

The movie sets up a clear suspect early on with the arrival of Parker's sort-of boyfriend DJ (Dylan Sprayberry) at the house, but as the story progresses, clues are revealed that indicate the true identity of the killer may be someone else.

Sick received critical acclaim during festival screenings for its ability to build tension and suspense beyond the initial set-up. The film promises to be a chilling and effective horror movie that capitalizes on the anxieties of the current moment.
