"1899" Canceled
The creators of Netflix's popular series Dark, Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, announced on Instagram that their new show, 1899, will not be renewed for a second season despite its positive reception and inclusion in the streamer's top 10 list. The announcement sparked speculation about the reasons behind the cancellation, with some speculating that it may be due to a low "completion rate" or high production costs. However, as Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos stated, "it's 70 percent gut and 30 percent data," meaning there is no one metric that determines the fate of a show on the platform. The cancelation of 1899 highlights the fact that Netflix, like other streaming services, must consider its bottom line and the potential risks of investing in shows that may not become huge hits. While this means that some shows may not make it to their intended conclusion, it also means that there are hidden gems for viewers to discover later on.
